i've just recently changed my road bike to disc brake version and i'm very happy with it (before I had Shimano Dura Ace BR-R9110 - direct mount, so i guess you could say the best/strongest rim brakes on the market)
And I can say that my DA rim brakes had stronger bite point/initial bite ! but overal modulation is better on disc brakes.

and I use Shimano (only!) disc brakes on a few of my MTB bikes for the last 17 years...
