A road bike will generally be faster...on the road. Though I can ride my gravel bike taking shortcuts through grass, dirt, potholes and other bad surfaces. I'm also geared lower to tackle very steep hills and elevation I might normally go around on a road bike. I would just run two wheelsets and the biggest cassette you can fit on your bike.
