Sometimes at 50% it felt like I was climbing a wall when the hill wasn't that steep. But I also have gears that are not low enough on my trainer bike, so reducing the difficulty helped a lot with that. If it weren't for chain angle, there is nothing I care less about on the trainer than what physical gear combination I am in. I'm looking forward to the day that I have virtual shifting.
The OP simply felt that his trainer resistance for a 5% slope in Rouvy felt way higher than in real life for whatever reason. Obviously increasing trainer difficulty is going to make this problem even worse.
