For the OP - in my experience, the Varia isn't all that sensitive about position. I mount mine below my saddle bag, sometimes with a gap, sometime with the saddlebag sitting right on top of it. I have not noticed a difference in performance. It may be worth noting, though, that having a higher than average leg/torso ratio, I tend to have a lot of seatpost exposed, even on bikes with horizontal top tubes.
