Broken, Beat and Scarred Zunow z-1 Pro Form



Picked this up a couple days ago in the... backyard junkyard of someone off FB marketplace. Second so far I have found perusing a picture of multiple bikes, zooming in, and seeing something neat. Always liked the neat aero steel frames from this era, and zunows have some of the coolest paintjobs. Add in my penchant for mechanical repair and this was a good choice. Came with the neat sugino mighty aero cranks, which was a nice bonus.
Below is it's current shape, waiting for some parts and just going to ride it for a couple hundred miles, then will tackle the paint+anything else.


This is the "good" side... Pedals are going to be changed before the test rides, BB is probably going to come out again to route the DT shifters through the frame holes. Currently has a 46-34 with a 12-23 FW since I have so many other 42-52 bikes, and after repairing these MTB cranks I thought this would be a good climbing bike option and having tight gears in my more used speed. Campagnolo brakes and rear hub. Brakes came from the davis swap and seem to work well with the shimano exage levers, since these levers have a built in brake release button. I have a stash of 15-25 year old grips so I figured I could do grips+bar tape, unsure about the look and feel but I will find out soon enough. 3T bars and stem are nice but the headset is.... wrong to say the least. Came with the Alan fork and a semi janked headset.

Sanded the 27.2 seatpost down a little.... and it isn't enough. Going to try a 3 stone brake hone since the post binds 2-3 inches in, could have been a post seat tube repair issue, or the fact that the frame lived outside in the sun for a while. This side has most of the sun damage, underside is fine of course and there was half an ounce of dirt in the brake routing via the top tube. Interestingly enough it's a full length tube so you don't have to go fishing for the line in the top tube. Used some rust converter in that tube and the top tube, seat tube as well. Might do the down tube, and stays since I know this thing lived a hard life.

Seat tube repair looks okay from my view, seemed to be one tube cut in half brazed together, while the headtube gray paint was over some bronze filler on the right side I saw where a front brake would hit the headtube/dt junction(figures).

This will be more of a long term project, but in a week or so I should be able to ride it and see. Already pretty light for my bikes at around 22.5lbs with plenty of heavy parts. Oh, and the last 2 pictures aren't on a flat surface
