The Explore 2 is not much more money and is much better for navigation.

"waymarked trail center" is
meaningless. It's a "
waymarked trail center route". This is talking about using route files that have "course points" (which are like waypoints) used to mark things like turns.
So, you are talking about the "verdict" (summary) at the end.
Considering that modern mountain biking is more likely to involve enduro-style ride-up/ride-down within a specific area, or follow a waymarked trail center route, there is less need for riders to have full-feature navigation. If you do require detailed routing, then you will probably be better served by the Garmin 530.

less suited for MTB.
130+ => basic track following.
540 => adds "turn guidance" (fancier navigation), route calculation, color screen.
840 => adds touch screen. Adds options for picking an address to calculate a route to.
Explore 2 is basically a 840 with a bigger screen but without "performance" features (like support for power meters).
