Other trick, which may have come come from the C.O.N.I. book ( I’d look it up but my brother borrowed my copy and lost it) was to wrap the straps around a screwdriver before use. The leather was softened a bit in this process, allowing the buckle to dig in to the strap a bit more and also to conform more comfortably to the foot.
I have a C.O.N.I. book so I will have to reference that. Won’t be today.
