You clearly have not worked in industry where Incomplete fusion, porosity, slag inclusions, pinholes, toe cracks, and undercut are all common welding defects much like in Ti frames and boiler tubes a crack often starts of follows along the edge of a weld. If you can not NDT the welds what you will notice with a good weld is its consistency, like a stack of dimes, does not have to look perfect, but it should have a uniform surface finish without any obvious signs of defects.
No, I don't work in such an industry. But, it doesn't matter, because you're missing the point. There are people that speak of bicycle frame welds like they're discussing custom paint jobs, i.e. from a purely aesthetic point of view. What do you not understand about that?
