They weren't important when 180s were the fashion, and it is objectively true that they have less leverage.
Just seems odd that people think something magical happens when they add or subtract 10mm off the average 170ish crank - which has been with us within a few millimeters for 100 years. The pendulum will swing again. But always above and then below 170.
