I wonder when you have the screw out, if you could screw it in from the bottom and when it enters the gap, you insert in something the edge of big washer or some other flat metal, so it spreads the clamp as you screw it in. That would be surefire way that it won't slip out on you, like that lever or some screwdriver or a chisel.
