I look for the models with the thickest leather like Brooks Pro and Ideale 90, at least in my mind they should hold their shape and wear better.
I would spend the extra money for one in really nice condition, rather than try to save a few bucks on a more worn-looking example.
That said, I had a very nice-looking Brooks Pro split across the nose, a couple months after I bought it, so ya never really know.
