The other possibility is the larger tires. Domanes come on 32 mm wide tires @ <= 70 psi. He changed the stock tires to more supple ones, but they're still 32 mm. He's used to 28 mm @ ~100 psi, IIRC.
His preferred riding position is upright; he's usually on the bar tops; not even the hoods.
He really WANTED to like the bike. I think he's going to stick with his two steel Waterfords from now on.
I have a Gunnar from 2006 and I also have a Seven which is a few years newer. They're fairly close by tape measure but I definitely feel the muscle difference. I can get more aero on the Gunnar but I can climb faster on the other bike. I think all the little differences add up to a significant difference. I have not done any timing stuff to see how much is real or perceived. The Gunnar is a bit heavier but could be built lighter with some $$$.
