I tried using a stand at the co-op and hated it.
I lace them then set all the nipples to the last thread, feeling with a blade. Then tighten by one turn at at time all around till it starts getting tight.
Then put the wheel in the bike. For round I use a piece of electric tape across the fork, set so it just tickles the rim. I move it once or twice as it gets more even.
For the side I just hold a piece of stiff plastic by the rim and nibble the wobble down. Then I figure out the centering. Yah I take way longer, but I get it as perfect as anyone. LOL.
