Except a good LBS can diagnose and if necessary fix your problems, recommend stuff they have experience with, while the internet can leave you more confused. Of course there are also shops where anything out of the mainstream can be met with "can't be done" or "you don't want that, do this" - they may be good at what they do, but if that's not what you want to do ...
