It is a the same barcon or downtube shifter and it doesn't have affects on the brake function at all. They work quite well and I have had them for years. You should try them and realize putting the shifting elsewhere is a pain but giving up the reliability and sweepability of a barcon/downtube shifter is also sometimes not desirable so combining the two is great.
