I've had my 1x11 150mm travel bike since 2018. I've beat on it pretty hard without much maintenance and the shifting is excellent. I've never seen that happen to anyone on a mtb ride..If the derailleur got sucked into the wheel there are only a few things that could cause it.

happened to one of my bikes - ran over a tree branch lurking below fallen leaves
of course this happened to a bike I had recently built with top XTR drivetrain - destroyed chain, rear derailleur, ti cassette, rear wheel (spokes), hanger etc
the bike sat for years untouched and still has not been returned to that same level
