I always kept an older American bike around for winter riding, if it rusts, so be it, I hit it with a shot of paint and call it good.
I tossed the Shimano hub and laced in an AW about 40 years ago and I even put new tires on it back in '81 or so. If it gets wet, so what, if it sits outside over night, no big deal. A shot of drain oil on the chain once in a while and a squirt of atf in the hub every so often and it just keeps going.
