OP: "split" suggests that it separated into two halves along its length, like wood does. It didn't do that, did it? Thought so...

I know a guy who rode a 36-spoke rear wheel with 7 missing spokes for years... no problems. Not that the wheel was worth more than $1, and the rim was plenty beefy (probably steel, ~ 1kg), but you should be reasonably OK with 1 deficit.
Yea... sorry, it didn't split longitude-wise, but rather snapped in half. Thanks for confirming that. And wow... 7 spokes? I would totally be sketching out.
