This is why I put spoke protectors back on my bikes. I never overshifted on my old road bike and thought it dorky to have a spoke protector, but one overshift on my townie (forward-mounted Dahon derailleur, too much gap between jockey pulley and cogs) and mildly chewing up a couple spokes to where they broke there from fatigue after a time, spoke protector on (and upgraded the RD). A tasteful clear plastic one just a bit bigger than the largest cog. Not a slotted chrome wagon wheel.
