Following up on this. You've got to put a little extra stress into it if you want to feel that 'high'. Try doing multiple 'high-stress' intervals when on a ride with only short breaks between the intervals. Example would be a pushing a one/two mile stretch of road in a higher than normal gear, then go back down to normal bicycling speed for a mile, then back up to the higher gear for another one/two miles, then back down for a mile - - - and on (choose different distances depending on your location/terrain). You'll feel it at the end.
