So far I've found the studded Marathon's to do well in light powder over snow. The fat bike I used briefly last winter would float and the studs would not grip; preliminary observations are that the 700x40 breaks through to the ice where the studs shine.
It is hard to compare accurately as with snow and ice there are always a multitude of variables that can affect performance. So far the only poor performance has been in deeper slushy conditions
