defacement does not always indicate theft
possible a cycle may come into possession of someone who suspects
it to be stolen and so defaces marking in an attempt to preclude losing it to a stolen claim

suggestion -
one simple check you could make would be to see if non-drive side crank arm matches that of drive side
to convert the cycle from a single plateau drive train to its present double it would not have been necessary to change the non-drive side arm
if it does not match it is likely to be original and could tell us who was the maker of the original chainset
