I got an old 1200 for cheap and rebuilt it for resale. I only rode it once, and it was too cold out to get much of a feel.
But what was clear was that Trek came up with a bonded construction method that produced frames that looked like they had no joints. Combined with quality paint, the overall effect was so perfect looking. But they can also come off slightly blocky looking.
Between the 1000 to 2000 aluminums and the 2100 to 2500 three-tube carbons, there were a ton of these bikes sold. Hybrid and MTB versions as well. It is not hard to find cheap ones because of their ubiquity and the lack of esteem bonded aluminum has today.
