Ah, yes, this reminds me of my cycle commuting days in London where I never had issues riding around after dark (pre LED days). The was invited to visit friends 'out in the sticks'. Back then taking your cycle by train was still possible. Once beyond the lights of the rural station true darkness prevailed, so much so, the battery lights shed no navigable light at all! Result: a 6 mile push, guided by one foot in the gutter.
