I'm sorry to see that no one was able to help out @fender1 with this question a while back - I'm in a similar situation with an SR 86bcd crankset that was originally on a Centurion Pro Tour and is now fitted to my Mercian as a double. I'd like to convert it back to a triple, but the clearance looks like it'll be iffy and I am wondering if the "safe" length for the spindle would be 122 or should I go all the way up to 128? I'm also running a 120mm rear with a 5-speed as fender1 was.

No, I haven't disassembled the bottom bracket to confirm the length of my current spindle, but I think it's in the 118 range and the clearance ALMOST looks okay for the inner chainring to slide in but I'm pretty sure it's just not quite.
