Indexed Downtube shifts, Anyone?

Like the title says, now I'm getting interested in trying out some indexed, clamp on, down tube shiftters. I'd like to give 'em a try. Suntour maybe? model? light action? The bike currently uses the compensating type (forgot the correct nomenclature) with the little housing mounted on the down tube. A random thought, 99 percent of the time I normally use only the front caliper. BC on the road bike at least, it's always been uncomfortable / difficult to reach over far enough to get a good grip on the right side lever. tried over the hoods under the hoods , index finger only , and 2 finger technique. still cant get a good hold enough to make the rears really effective . I looked into so called "small hand" levers, will they make a significant improvement? Also, I modified the base of the right hand lever by carefully removing and contouring the lower side of the lever housing in an effort to move the right side lever to reduce the distance my right hand needs to reach forward. Still no joy.
