One of the letters, labeled "Twenty Questions," is from a reader asking whether Columbus uses different decals for SL, SP, and PS tubing. In his reply, John Shubert says no and notes, more or less in passing, that SL tubing was designed with a weight limit of roughly 160 pounds in mind.
I remembered Columbus's specified weight limit as being closer to 180 pounds, but, in any event, the weight limit seems not to have been about frame longevity but about racing performance, the idea being that heavier riders would benefit from the use of heavier tubing.
In any event, Columbus apparently stopped publishing recommended weight limits for their steel tubing in the mid-'80's or so.
