I know this thread was 4 years ago, but I'm so curious what you ended up doing? Did you get the caged bearing unit out? I just overhauled a Shimano hub and encountered that tricky dust seal that looks so easy to damage if removed.
I didn't get the caged bearing out. I just wiped out the old grease as much as I could, then shot a bunch of fresh grease back in and call it good.
