I think the design just allows you to crank them down more than lever-operated skewers. The primary bike I bought them for, my Gugified ‘71 Raleigh International, had a rear wheel slippage problem, particularly under load (e.g., hauling my Burley trailer to Costco and back). The DT Swiss skewer solved that problem.
