I commute to work on a bike from Saint Paul to downtown Minneapolis and always wear a good helmet with a mirror, bright vest, reflective clothing, and lights. I usually set the rear light to the heartbeat rhythm thinking that it sends a primal message to drivers. Although the Twin Cities is very bike friendly, I always RIDE LOUD, meaning that I try to be as visible and predictable as possible to drivers. The two times that I was nearly hit, I didn’t have the headlight on and the drivers were looking left before making a right turn across the bike path. Lesson learned and the front light is now always on. The helmet mirror took some getting used to but now it’s essential and I feel over exposed if I don’t have it. Minnesota passed a law that allows Idaho rolls, but I only do this when there are no cars approaching the intersection. If I want to have audio for my phone, I use Shokz skull headphones so that I can still hear peripheral sounds. Ride safe!
