In recent decades, I use cage and strap pedals on my townie, because if I'm not in peak shape, I need to walk the steeper uphills. Hiking boots are better than even MTB SPDs for walking, enough that I need to shoe-goo the heels a couple times a year.
Rigid sole bike shoes, I think they transfer well to others, perhaps only the soft insole would need replacing. My pre-lake Eddie Merckx cage/strap shoes had cork insoles that did not come out, if I recall.
The walking thing really hit home yesterday. I had a flat one mile into my ride and walked my bike back to my jeep. I need to throw a repair kit together to carry with me.
