if the pads aren't the correct thickness for your calipers, they might not fit in the calipers... one might fit in, but the second one won't fit... and then, they wouldn't slip over the disc... the standard is typically 2mm of pad material. I've had to grind a tenth or so off to get a bit-too-thick aftermarket pads to fit into a caliper before.
if you want longer lasting pads, get semi-metallic or full metallic pads... expect a slight reduction in braking power, though... and they will be noisier too.
