Take a ride in Manhattan or Brooklyn. You might see a difference. Maybe I'm feeling overly optimistic these days, but I notice things like drivers looking in their side view mirrors before crossing the bike lane. I do occasionally see behavior that seems to be motivated by resentment, but not that often, and it's fair to expect at least a little of it.

Not many cyclists here in the City wear Lycra™. I've pretty much given up on cycling specific clothing. I believe you are right that it tends to crank up the resentment.
