Microshift 7 speed shifters should be compatible with a Shimano 7/8/9 rear mech AND a freewheel spaced for Shimano indexing. If you are using an old Sachs Maillard freewheel or some other obscure non-Shimano spaced freewheel, I doubt indexing will work very well.
