I remember rigging up 8s Ergolevers with a "Hubbub"-modded Shimano lower-end rear SIS derailer for use with a five-speed freewheel on the PX10LE below.

I later re-spaced a wheelset to 124mm and fitted a 7s Shimano freewheel, so went with a Campagnolo Chorus derailer at that point.

Both setups indexed accurately over their particular freewheel.

I had previously tested early 9s Ergolevers and found that they worked quite well with a Shimano derailer and standard 6s freewheel.
An Allvit derailer that I also tested with Ergolevers around the same time was a complete failure (because the Allvit had such non-linear actuation, it would index between just three cogs).
An old used bike I once bought came with 8s Ergolevers cabled to a Nuovo Record drivetrain including a 5s freewheel, but pretty much did not work at all!
I ran a Gran Turismo rear derailer (having a reduced chain gap modification) together with a 7s Shimano SIS bar-end lever and 6s cassette, and this did index somewhat accurately, though less than perfect. Shown at bottom:
