Unfortunately, "platitudes" are all you're going to get. The problem with calling them platitudes is that they work. The mechanism really doesn't matter, only the result. I'm results oriented, see my sig. I do whatever I have to do to get results, and I find out what I have to do by experimentation. I knew that heavy lifting increases endurance on the bike long before that was recognized. Back then, in this forum, all the most prolific and seemingly knowledgeable posters agreed that gym work was detrimental for cyclists. The mechanism didn't matter, see? Only the result matters. So start experimenting. Takes a while, but as it is said, experience starts when you begin. Post your results when you get them. We all want to know how to train better.
I understand your wish to pursue scientific truth. As you discovered, no one knows today, and you probably don't want to go back to school to do formal research. Oh well. "So much to know, so little time."
