I run 50/34 double on a road crank using a Microshift 9 speed triple FD, I had planned using a triple but it wouldn't fit on my folding bike. Glad I got the triple FD as it easily accommodates the 16 tooth difference and the chain never drags on the bottom of the cage when on small/small.

The main difference between a road and mountain crank is the Q-factor. The other stuff shouldn't care if it's mountain gearing and bike as long as it's within the functional limits of the FD.
