the post he quoted was directed at CyclingMTB, and addressing the posted misconception that going 1x LIMITED drops.. the opposite is true.

only with the use of anti-drop parts does 1 x _ become consistently rideable in rough off road situations.
he said "modern".. with no constraining time frame, whatsoever.... then shifted to bash guards for XC bikes.

"Modern bikes:" can extend clear back to the first pneumatic tires, or the first multi-geared bikes, or ones with derailleurs, or.. well, you get the picture by now, i'd hope.
