Thanks all, especially the fellow New Englanders. I'll try all of the advice and keep working those hills. I'm also going to join my local LBS's group ride for newbies. The owner claims that it will teach me proper shifting technique and group riding skills.

P.S. Guitarwizard...The CT river does start a ways up north from us but you know us Mass people we believe that everything begins and ends at our state borders.
