I kept cost records in the last two bikes I built for myself. They both came to just over $1,000. I think that's pretty good compared with buying new, and they are more tailored to my needs than a stock bike.
I'm not counting the expenses to replace parts on the bike, as I think those are operating costs. I'm not counting upgrades, either, because the function is the same with each change.
