Eggplant Jeff - I'd guess that internal paint (sloshing around in there) would work fine if you could get the proper consistency of paint, that would dry in enough time. Then it would basically do what Frame Saver and T9 do. A key here is easy of application by the end user. Paint is also more difficult to clean out if it gets where you don't want it - frame saver wipes off with WD-40 on a rag. But I think it could totally work if you had the right characteristics of adhesion and speed of drying to the paint.
