Comments like the those from the motorist reflect, among many things, his complete self-absorption with his perceived superiority. He's clearly jealous that others who are legally entitled to operate on the road pay less than he does, conveniently omitting the facts that his vehicle does the damage to the road, not the bicycle; that his vehicle prompts the enactment and enforcement of the regulations designed to try to keep him alive, not the bicycle; and, of course, forgetting that cyclists are home-owners, businessmen, etc., who pay taxes to maintain the infrastructure as well and as much as he does. Most cyclists also have drivers licenses too. The freedom he sees cyclists enjoying is what he hoped to achieve when he bought his precious car, but finds, instead, that he is a slave to the car and only has the freedom to sit in traffic 80% of the time. Poor b**tard will probably die in a fiery wreck one day.
