Stem & Seatpost Suspension vs. Tire Size & Air Pressure

I guess that I will go ahead and open this can of worms... The objective is maximizing comfort on gravel roads that may be a bit "chunky" so they say and not getting beat to death riding these roads day after day.

So is there any comfort advantage to adding a suspension stem or seatpost if you already run a fairly wide tire at lower air pressure? In mechanical terms the pneumatic tires act as springs and would be connected in "series" configuration with the springs in the stem or seatpost. So are there any comfort advantages in having extra springs in the stem and seatpost?

Your thoughts?
