A 9 speed rear with a 1x front might make it a little bit harder to find a gear ratio that will allow for the most comfortable cadence when riding in a group where you pretty much have to ride the speed of the group if you aren't on the front pacing them.

Why not a 2 x 12 or a 1 x 13?
