Most people would struggle to walk up such conditions, forget on a bicycle.
There's a 20-27% pitch (per Strava mapping data) I can ride on my MTB (32x52 low gear), it's not particularly loose, and less than 100m long. It takes me to my limit, but I'm mediocre and old. If it was a loose surface, not a chance. On my gravel bike, not a chance.
Since Mr. Mayer is a superior rider to everyone that has ever ridden a bicycle, I have no doubt he could easily cruise up such a grade.
