I competed a lot in my late 30’s into my late 40’s. Tri team events, bike or swim leg, I was really good at both and it was not unusual for us to place top 3 or so. Plu Open water swims, masters pool stuff. Did a team triathlon at Jones Beach State park in NY one year, I was the bike leg. It was a rough and windy day, headwinds of 30-40 on of the bike sections. It just sucked, 13 mph one way, 36 the other, doing that twice. I realized I was not enjoying this and it was not fun. I stopped competing after that, havent competed in 20 years, but might do an ocean open water swim this year with no expectation of placing. Just for fun.
