How to carry a cell phone while e-biking?

I ride for pleasure and light exercise, and have been averaging around 30 miles a ride several times a week. I ride on rural country roads which are pretty smooth but still have lots of bumps and pot holes.
It is Pennsylvania after all, and we are known for our bad road surfaces.
Recently I have been preparing for my ride ( helmet, sunglasses, bike gloves, etc) and turning on the display of my Aventon Level 3 to establish a Bluetooth connection. After establishing this connection with the App om my cell phone, I go to RECORD, and hit GO. At this point everything is fine and the App is working as it should.
Yesterday, after my ride, I went to check the length of ride, time of ride, average speed, etc. And the ride was not recorded. This has happened on multiple occasions.
I have to assume that somehow while putting the phone in my pocket of my old man cargo shorts, I have managed to disable the recording process,
Do most of you carry a cell phone while riding, and if so, what is the preferred method? I'm not sure that I want another adornment to my handlebars. I could carry my cellphone in my rear rack bag, or just get one of the many cell phone handlebar holders. Some of them have very bad reviews telling chilling tales of cell pones flying off at the smallest of bumps.
Is there a prefered method, or one that I haven't touched on?
Thanks
Robert
