I wouldn't like a belt around my waist. But perhaps for light stuff it's not a issue. Or maybe it's just not the issue I imagine, since I've not tried it. The period I was using a fanny pack, it was strapped between my saddle and backstays on my Raleigh Competition GS. At least until I decided to get a proper bike bag to replace it.
I noticed that if I carry the same amount of stuff in the fanny pack, (let's call it medium size, where John Flores' is large and that one earlier in the thread is small) it's a lot smaller of a sweat patch, and it relocates the sweat patch down to the upper butt area, which is sweaty anyhow. The sweat patch in jersey pockets is especially bad when the jersey pocket items are in a ziploc bag first. (this ChiComm fanny pack of mine has that breathable fabric where it sits against its human, so that helps a bit)

It's also free storage out of the airstream.

One does have to be careful in how one mounts and dismounts the bike to not catch it on the saddle nose.
