If you don't have a caliper or bearing ruler, you can line the bearings up, side by side, on a scale.
(16) 3/16" balls will equal 3" for example. 1/2 that many will equal 1-1/2".
Use the appropriate amount & number for best/adequate resolution.
EDIT- You use the term "lock washer". Don't you mean "lock nut"?
Same number of balls/side?
(8) 5/32" balls equal 1-1/4".
