about 5mm of bare axle thread should remain when the proper lock nuts are in place, on both ends of the axle, and Jammed against the Axle Cones that the bearings ride on....
and for the record,, almost ALL front hubs use 10 (TEN) 3/16" ball bearings in each side.
Yep, Lock nut, know the difference, just a brain blip. Yes, about 5mm exposed on each end

IF the pre-mounting axle free play is not maintained, the bearing clearance gets TOO tight once the QR is levered over... Rapid Cone Wear, galling, and pitting is the typical result of that situation...
Yep, that's how I had it the first time, finger tight and then backed off just a bit. Thought maybe I had hit a rough thread and left it too "loose" but it was right and when I tightened it a bit more then it was jammed and would have been grinding.
I think I did all of this right and have done this before with a decent number of hubs, which is why I was confused?
So if I open up the hub and the bearings measure 3/16" (and I know there are 10 on each side) then what? What else would cause play in the hub?
